Summer for most of us is a time of being outside, enjoying nature, playing in the water and connecting with the elements. It’s a time of family, fun, celebration and eating lighter fare.
As we wrap up summer over the next month, here are some things tohelp you stay happy, healthy and to get the most “Glow” from the summer.
Eat and Drink Nutrition
That means every meal you prepare should have a n underlying element of nutrition. Load your plate with finely chopped or blended summer greens, nitrifying, power-packed herbs (dill, basil, oregano, cilantro and even purselane) , healthy fats (coconut, avocado, olive and hemp), low carb veggies (zucchini, radishes, fennel, purple cabbage), and superfoods (spirulina, green powders, hemp seeds, maca, mesquite, chaga, reishi or any supplement or tincture that resonates with the current you). By asking yourself “What nourishment does my body need at this moment?” you will be acknowledging yourself in a kinder way and letting your body know that you care. If you are about to go out into the elements (sun, water, etc.) make sure you are well hydrated. Don’t just drink water, in fact, drinking water can be less hydrating than a green juice or a sliced cucumber! Remember to eat liquids through raw, fresh whole, juiced and blended plant foods. When you are hydrated, your skin will glow and any facial lines will quickly fill in with water. Try consuming a gallon a day of liquids (does not include coffee) and see how beautiful and plumb your skin begins to look and how energized you feel! Ask yourself at every meal, “Body, how can I serve you in this moment?”
Move your body as much as you can!
Have you heard? “Sitting is the new smoking!” What that means is that we sit way too much and it’s not good for us. In an Epidemiology study, it was proved that people who sat more than six hours a day died earlier than those who limited sitting time to 3 hours a day or less.
Don’t be a victim and say there is notihng you can do about it! Get up and move your booty! It’s easy to stay active in the summer with daily yoga classes, camping, summer biking and hiking or walking. The idea is to get out there in the sunshine and move as much as you can. Instead of sitting, try a standing desk, squatting while working or eating, sitting with your legs outstretched and doing some kind of floor stretching or stationary bike while you watch a movie or surf social media. You can also get a bike with a basket and bike to your errands or to work. It’s your life at stake! I stand most of the day because of running a cafe and teaching classes, but most people are not as lucky. How about a few standing squats next to your desk? Aim to do 10 sets of 5-10 pushups a day spaced out in equal intervals (set a timer on your phone to go off once every 1 1/2 hours and do them next to your desk), Do lunges on the way to the bathroom or toe lifts while you wait in line at the bank or store. Now that’s being pro-active!
Summer is the best time to make new friends! Meet new people for walks or outdoor activities, and go to free concerts in the park where you can dance and socialize . Once the weather gets cold again we tend to hibernate, so now is a great time to build those strong connections that you will be able to invite for dinner in the fall and winter. How can you do this? Make plans to camp with your current acquaintances, join meetup groups, take dance classes, volunteer or work for a cafe that serves healthy food or volunteer to help rebuild the trails in your area, etc. The friendships you build now can last a lifetime. People who have strong friendships are proven to be happier and live longer.
